This verse is often quoted as the clearest summary of the gospel—the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.

And at the center of that verse is a crucial word: “believe.”

But what does it actually mean to believe in Jesus?

The Original Greek Word: Pisteuō (πιστεύω)

In the original Greek text, the word translated as “believe” is pisteuō. This word goes far beyond simply accepting something as fact. It carries the deep sense of:

Trust

Faithfulness

Commitment

It implies placing one’s full confidence in someone—in this case, Jesus.

To “believe” in Jesus means more than just acknowledging His existence or accepting that He is the Son of God. Let’s explore five powerful examples:

1. John 6:29 – Believing is the Work of God

“Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent.’”

After performing the miracle of feeding thousands, Jesus was asked what God requires.
