They train us to worship status, possessions, and self until the word becomes unfruitful. His own words frame the stakes and point us to the way of the Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Mark 4:18\u201319, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cAnd these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, <strong>And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word<\/strong>, and it becometh unfruitful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Luke 12:15, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cTake heed, and beware of covetousness: <strong>for a man\u2019s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Matthew 6:19\u201321, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cLay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:<br>But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven\u2026<br><strong>For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Matthew 6:24, NIV)<\/strong><br>\u201c<strong>No man can serve two masters<\/strong>\u2026 Ye cannot serve God and mammon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus to the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:21\u201324, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cIf thou wilt be perfect, go and <strong>sell that thou hast, and give to the poor<\/strong>, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and <strong>come and follow me<\/strong>\u2026<br>Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven\u2026<br><strong>It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle<\/strong>, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Luke 16:9\u201313, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cI tell you, use worldly wealth\u00a0to gain friends for yourselves, <strong>so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings<\/strong>.\u2026<br>Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much\u2026<br><strong>So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,\u00a0who will trust you with true riches?\u00a0<\/strong>\u2026<br><strong>Ye cannot serve God and money.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Use temporary wealth for eternal mercy\u2014especially for \u201cthe least\u201d (cf. Matthew 25:35\u201340). At judgment the King will say to the merciful, \u201c<em>Come, ye blessed\u2026 inherit the kingdom<\/em>\u201d (Matthew 25:34); to those who withheld mercy, \u201c<em>Depart from me\u2026<\/em>\u201d (Matthew 25:41).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"world-define\">1) What \u201cthe world\u201d means (k\u00f3smos \/ ai\u014dn)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key texts:<\/strong> John 15:18\u201319; 17:14\u201316; 18:36; 1 John 2:15\u201317; James 4:4; James 1:27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>k\u00f3smos<\/em> = the human order in rebellion against God; <em>ai\u014dn<\/em> = \u201cthis age,\u201d its operating mode. Creation itself is good; the forbidden love is allegiance to the rebel value-system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (John 17:14\u201316, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cI have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them\u2026 <strong>they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (John 18:36, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201c<strong>My kingdom is not of this world<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cYe adulteresses\u201d (James 4:4)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You <strong>adulterous people<\/strong>! Do you not know that friendship with the world is <strong>enmity with God<\/strong>? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>moichal\u00eddes<\/strong><\/em> (<em>adulterous<\/em>) = spiritual adultery.  This means you\u2019ve broken faith with God; by loving the world, you commit <strong>spiritual adultery<\/strong>, proving your heart belongs to another master rather than to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u00e9chthra<\/strong><\/em> (enmity) = literally means <strong>hostility, hatred, or deep-seated opposition<\/strong>\u2014the condition of being an enemy.  In James 4:4 he means that <strong>aligning yourself with the world\u2019s system places you in active opposition to God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is James?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>James the Just, the Lord\u2019s brother and leader of the Jerusalem church (see Acts 15). He writes in the prophetic tradition, calling God\u2019s people back to undivided loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"diagnose\">2) Diagnosing love of the world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lust of the flesh<\/strong>, <strong>lust of the eyes<\/strong>, <strong>pride of life<\/strong> (1 John 2:16).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thorns that choke<\/strong> the word (Matt 13:22; Mark 4:19).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Serving God vs Mammon<\/strong> (Matt 6:24).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>John (1 John 2:15\u201317, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cLove not the world, neither the things that are in the world\u2026 <strong>the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life<\/strong>\u2026 <strong>the world passeth away<\/strong>, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"riches\">3) Riches &amp; the narrow way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Texts:<\/strong> Mark 10:17\u201331; Matt 6:19\u201321; Luke 12:13\u201321; Matt 7:13\u201314.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wealth\u2019s \u201cgravitational pull\u201d competes for trust. Jesus warns that riches can make the narrow path feel unnecessary, but the call is to treasure God above all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Matthew 7:13\u201314, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201c<strong>Straight is the gate, and narrow is the way<\/strong>, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Luke 12:15, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cA man\u2019s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"work\">4) Working in the world without loving it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Texts:<\/strong> Matt 5:14\u201316; Matt 25:14\u201330; Luke 12:35\u201348.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work becomes worship when it is stewardship for the Master\u2019s purposes\u2014faithful, watchful, excellent, and aimed at blessing others for the Father\u2019s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Matthew 25:21, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cWell done, thou good and faithful servant\u2026 thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"shrewd\">5) Shrewd yet pure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Texts:<\/strong> Matt 10:16; Luke 16:1\u201313.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be strategically wise without moral compromise. Use worldly resources for merciful ends that have eternal weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Matthew 10:16, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cBe ye therefore <strong>wise as serpents, and harmless as doves<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Luke 16:9\u201311, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201cMake to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness\u2026 <strong>If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trust\">6) Money, anxiety, and trust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Texts:<\/strong> Matt 6:24\u201334.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refuse anxiety by entrusting provision to the Father. Set first things first\u2014seek His reign and rightness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Jesus (Matthew 6:33\u201334, KJV)<\/strong><br>\u201c<strong>Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness<\/strong>; and all these things shall be added unto you.
