But in modern English, the word can seem vague or shallow\u2014often reduced to mental agreement or positive thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Testament was originally written in Greek \u2014 specifically, <em>Koine Greek<\/em>. The word translated as <em>\u201cbelieve\u201d<\/em> appears approximately <strong>280 times<\/strong> throughout the New Testament. Remarkably, the Gospel of John alone uses the word nearly <strong>98 times<\/strong>, more than any other book. Clearly, understanding what <em>\u201cbelieve\u201d<\/em> truly means is essential, given how central it is to the message of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s Not just mental agreement or positive thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddfe 1. <strong>The Original Greek: \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9 (pisteu\u014d)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is the main Greek word translated as <strong>\u201cbelieve\u201d<\/strong> in the New Testament.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It means: <strong>To trust in<\/strong>,<br><strong>To rely on<\/strong>,<br><strong>To be persuaded by<\/strong>,<br><strong>To commit to<\/strong>,<br><strong>To put confidence in<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So biblically, to <strong>believe in Jesus<\/strong> (John 3:16, John 11:25\u201326) <strong>already includes the meaning of &#8220;trust&#8221;<\/strong>\u2014especially in the <strong>relational<\/strong> and <strong>life-committing<\/strong> sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcdc 2. <strong>Why English translators used \u201cbelieve\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Early English translations like the <strong>King James Version (1611)<\/strong> reflected the vocabulary of that time. Back then, <strong>\u201cbelieve in\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cbelieve on\u201d<\/strong> someone was commonly understood to mean <strong>deep trust or reliance<\/strong>, not just intellectual agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But over time, in modern English\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u274c \u201cBelieve\u201d has become:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Often <strong>mental<\/strong> only: &#8220;I believe 2 + 2 = 4&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or <strong>detached<\/strong>: \u201cI believe in ghosts,\u201d \u201cI believe in hard work\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So for many modern readers, it <strong>doesn\u2019t capture the full biblical meaning anymore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2705 3. <strong>Where \u201ctrust\u201d actually appears in some translations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern versions (like the <strong>NLT<\/strong>, <strong>CSB<\/strong>, or <strong>TPT<\/strong>) will sometimes <strong>use \u201ctrust\u201d<\/strong> instead of \u201cbelieve\u201d when translating <em>pisteu\u014d<\/em>, especially to make the <strong>relational aspect<\/strong> more clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>John 14:1 (NLT):<\/strong><br>\u201cDon\u2019t let your hearts be troubled. <strong>Trust in God<\/strong>, and <strong>trust also in me<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>vs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>John 14:1 (ESV):<\/strong><br>\u201cBelieve in God; believe also in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Same Greek word: <strong>\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/strong><br>Two different English renderings: &#8220;believe&#8221; vs. &#8220;trust&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcac 4. So should we say \u201ctrust\u201d instead of \u201cbelieve\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yes\u2014when teaching, discipling, or preaching<\/strong>, it\u2019s often <em>more helpful<\/em> to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen Jesus says \u2018believe in me,\u2019<br>He means: <strong>trust Me, rely on Me, give your life to Me.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps people move beyond mere intellectual faith to <strong>relational surrender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2728 Final Thought:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Bible uses \u201cbelieve\u201d in English,<br>But <strong>Jesus meant \u201ctrust your life to Me.\u201d<\/strong><br>Real faith is not just believing that He exists\u2014<br>It\u2019s <strong>trusting Him personally<\/strong> as your Savior, King, and Life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus\u2019 Teachings on Belief \u2014 5 Key Passages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the following passages shows how Jesus used the word <em>believe<\/em> in life-changing ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The phrase \u201c\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u1f43\u03bd\u201d implies movement or direction \u2014 to believe <em>into<\/em> Jesus, not just <em>about<\/em> Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udde0 <strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> Jesus makes it clear: the \u201cwork\u201d that pleases God isn\u2019t rituals or achievements \u2014 it\u2019s a <strong>lifestyle of trust<\/strong> in the one He sent, leaning into Jesus daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. John 11:25\u201326 \u2013 Believing Unlocks Eternal Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\ud83d\udcd6 <strong>John 11:21\u201327 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>21<\/strong> Martha said to Jesus, \u201cLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.<br><strong>22<\/strong> But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>23<\/strong> Jesus said to her, \u201cYour brother will rise again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>24<\/strong> Martha said to him, \u201cI know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>25<\/strong> Jesus said to her,<br><strong>\u201cI am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>26<\/strong> <strong>and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.
