What It Means to Believe<\/em> \u2014 According to Jesus<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes<\/strong> in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.\u201d
\u2014 John 3:16 (NIV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In John 3:16, the word \u201cbelieve\u201d sits at the center of God\u2019s offer of eternal life. But in modern English, the word can seem vague or shallow\u2014often reduced to mental agreement or positive thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Testament was originally written in Greek \u2014 specifically, Koine Greek<\/em>. The word translated as \u201cbelieve\u201d<\/em> appears approximately 280 times<\/strong> throughout the New Testament. Remarkably, the Gospel of John alone uses the word nearly 98 times<\/strong>, more than any other book. Clearly, understanding what \u201cbelieve\u201d<\/em> truly means is essential, given how central it is to the message of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s Not just mental agreement or positive thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So biblically, to believe in Jesus<\/strong> (John 3:16, John 11:25\u201326) already includes the meaning of “trust”<\/strong>\u2014especially in the relational<\/strong> and life-committing<\/strong> sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Early English translations like the King James Version (1611)<\/strong> reflected the vocabulary of that time. Back then, \u201cbelieve in\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cbelieve on\u201d<\/strong> someone was commonly understood to mean deep trust or reliance<\/strong>, not just intellectual agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
